In 2007, the world at large first learned of the Bhut Jolokia (Capsicum chinense) or Ghost Naga chilly, at over one million Scoville heat units the hottest ever recorded until then. It was probably the most feared culinary herb. By comparison, the Mexican habanero is about half that potent. But it was a short-lived distinction. It was overtaken by a number of new creations, most notably the Carolina reaper at an astounding 2 million plus Scoville units, and then by Pepper X at 2.5 million plus. A
