The Football World Cup is upon us, and so is the quadrennial season of pain, anger, and self-flagellation for Indian football fans. As has been the case forever, Indian football doesn’t figure anywhere in world football, or Asian football. It has never qualified for the World Cup finals—whether for the original Jules Rimet Cup or the FIFA trophy—and based on the current state of affairs, doesn’t seem likely to do it in the near future.
