 It was in great emotional distress that I reached Santiago.
There was no problem in Machu Picchu itself. But I hadn’t been able to breathe
in Cusco. There were two reasons. Machu Picchu is at an altitude of 8,000 feet,
while Cusco is at 12,000 feet. Also, we’d wandered about Machu Picchu at
daytime, whereas we had to spend the night at Cusco. The plan had been to spend
the night in Cusco, sightsee at daytime and then go to Uyuni the next day.
